About Facilitator

Ferne van Zyl has over 30 years experience of working with babies and toddlers. She believes that "Toilet Training" should approached as a developmental process and that the relationship between adult and child is central to it being a positive experience. It is about preparing yourself, having the appropriate equipment and knowing how to best support  the development with clear  communication about expectations and limits.

For over a decade Ferne owned and operated Down Under 3, a Montessori based learning centre for babies and toddlers on Sydneys’ North Shore. Through her work with parents and carers she began facilitating the hugely successful Faber and Mazlish workshops “How to Talk so Kids will Listen”, and “Siblings without Rivalry” as well as developing a Toileting Independence workshop where she became known popularly as “The Poo-Poo Guru”

Ferne currently consults to parents, early childhood educators and Montessori organisations around Australia and New Zealand. She has provided training and support for hundreds of families on setting up environments for independence, effective communication and practical strategies for dealing with challenging behaviour.
