10 Top Tips for Toileting Independence

  1. Start early - It’s a developmental process that involves stages, not something to happen at one specific age.

  2. Prepare yourself and be committed and consistent.

  3. Prepare the environment - the right sized easy to use equipment.

  4. Get to know your child’s schedule and simplify clothing.

  5. Use emphatic language - "It's time to...." or "Let's go to...."

  6. Acknowledge feelings especially the negative ones - "That is upsetting for you"

  7. Offer choices - "It's time to go to the toilet, now or after you finish your puzzle?"

  8. Encourage helpfully - Describe what you see or feel or think your child is feeling.

  9. Slow down and exercise patience.

  10. Be kind to yourself and them when it doesn’t go according to plan.
